• Independent healthcare providers from across the country have come together to commit to implementing a new medical governance framework that will help ensure all independent sector providers in England are able to further improve the care they are giving to their patients. 
• The framework touches on the governance responsibilities of payors or commissioners of services in the independent sector, and NHS organisations whose medical practitioners also work in the sector.

• Findings from an analysis of a sample of 85 inspection reports from CQC inspection programme of independent doctor and clinic services providing primary medical care in England.
• Main areas of concern related to:
• safe and effective prescribing
• awareness of safeguarding and establishing patients’ identity, particularly for children and their parents or legal guardians
• arrangements for clinical oversight, governance frameworks and quality monitoring and improvement
• recording details and managing patients’ care records
• gaining appropriate consent
• sharing information with a patient’s NHS GP or other health professionals in accordance with guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC)

• A series of case studies which demonstrate how strong partnerships between the NHS and independent sector providers are tackling the issue of Delayed discharges and transfers of care (DTOCs).
• Includes: virtual wards, complex care provided in care homes, use of spare capacity in independent hospitals, better use of intermediate care, specialist rehabilitation to improve patient recovery.
