  • This report for commissioners and managers in health and social care develops a vision and roadmap for providing more options for housing with care and support. It is the result of the research undertaken by the Commission on the Role of Housing in the Future of Care and Support.
  •  The Commission focused on the needs of people over the age of 65, although it also takes account of examples of promising practice in relation to working age adults (including those with learning disabilities). The Commission also considered the specific needs of diverse communities who often find it more difficult than others to access high-quality housing that facilitates their care and support. It includes recommendations for local partners including NHS.

  • A study that maps primary health care services for people who are homeless in England found  significant variation in the type of service available, with some areas poorly covered. Of the 900 homelessness projects (hostels and day centres) that were surveyed by the researchers, only 43% were linked to a specialist primary health care service.
  • The report does not comment on the quality of the services. 
  • A separate report (inventory) gives information about 77 of the identified services.

    •  2. To radically rethink the delivery of health and care services in areas free from legacy constraints, and to support learning about new models of deeply integrated care

    • Standards and supporting guidance to develop the housing sector’s capability in generating evidence of ‘what works’ in improving health outcomes, led by HACT.

  • NHS England is seeking expressions of interest in its Health New Towns programme
  • This programme forms part of the Five year Forward View supporting the development of strong communities and healthy places to live through good urban and housing design.
  • The programme has three core objectives: 
    • a. To develop new and more effective ways of shaping new towns, neighbourhoods and strong communities that promote health and wellbeing, prevent illness and keep people independent
    • b. To show what is possible when we radically rethink how health and care services could be delivered, freed from the legacy constraints (i.e. existing services) that operate in other areas. This will support the New Models of Care programme by adding to the learning about how health and care services could be integrated to provide better outcomes at the same or lower cost
    • c. To accomplish the first two objectives in a way that can be replicated elsewhere, making learning available to other national programmes as well as other local areas
