The research acknowledges the importance of developing more targeted, personalised and efficient interventions to improve the employment rate among people affected by ill health and disability. Having a detailed understanding of work and health dynamics helps inform our strategy to prevent health-related job loss and support more people affected by ill health or disability into work.
The work uses Understanding Society, a large and detailed longitudinal survey, to explore the pattern, distribution and underlying causes of transitions in employment status that are influenced by health or disability.
The chronic conditions considered are asthma, arthritis, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina, emphysema, hyperthyroidism or an over-active thyroid, hypothyroidism or an under-active thyroid, chronic bronchitis, any kind of liver condition, cancer or malignancy, diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure, clinical depression, heart attack or myocardial infarction, and stroke. These are the only conditions explicitly referenced in the data.

This guidance is about staff who have taken their NHS pension scheme (NHSPS) benefits and who now wish to return to work for the NHS. This is sometimes called ‘retire and return’.
The guidance aims to help employers put in place policies and procedures so that decisions to re-employ staff can be justified in terms of service need and value for money.

The guide offers advice, hints and tips, as well as key information around the introduction of the apprenticeship levy and how to make the most of the changes which will come into effect from April 2017.
