Health Equity in England: The Marmot Review 10 Years On
Institute of Health Equity February 2020
  • Ten years since the publication of The Marmot Review health inequalities have widened overall, and the amount of time people spend in poor health has increased since 2010. The slowdown in life expectancy is not down to exceptionally cold winters or virulent flu, and cannot be attributed solely to problems with the NHS or social care. The increase in health inequalities in England points to social and economic conditions, many of which have shown increased inequalities, or deterioration since 2010.
  • The practical evidence about how to reduce inequalities has built significantly since 2010. There is considerable technical and practical experience about how to reduce health inequalities learned from some local areas, such as Coventry and Greater Manchester, and other countries.
