Postcode lottery for surgery?

Is Access to Surgery A Postcode Lottery?
Royal College of Surgeons, 15 July 2014
  • This report claims that many CCGs are ignoring clinical evidence in their surgical commissioning policies.
  • The study investigated commissioning policies relating to four common surgical procedures (tonsillectomy, hip replacement, inguinal hernia repair and surgical treatment for glue ear) carried out on the NHS and compared those policies to evidence-based guidance published by The Royal College of Surgeons, the surgical specialty associations and NICE.
  • Methodology: A total of 58 CCGs were approached with FOI requests. CCGs selected were those that were assessed in the first wave of authorisation by NHS England during 2012–2013 (n=35) and CCGs identified in November 2013 that were forecasting a deficit for their first year of operation (n=24). (One CCG fell into both categories.) Four CCGs did not respond.
