- This report looks at nine towns from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland who are working to improve their community wellbeing. It highlights key factors in the journeys of each of these towns, providing an account of how the town got from where it was to where it is now, including who contributed to the journey and the approaches they used.
- The report illustrates the importance of places recognising their existing assets, as well as the importance of an enabling environment and external support.
- The report also identifies levers of change across the case studies, which include: community connectors or anchors which are able to connect silos of activity; shared community spaces that help different groups of people to connect; innovation and willingness to try new approaches; celebrating local assets; collaborative working across public, private and third sectors with the community.
- It concludes that national policies designed to support local development should be both evidence-based and also respond to the particularity of place that makes each town unique. (Edited publisher abstract)
